Russia has a long tradition in engineering, aerospace, energy, materials science and technology. For Indian students, the main questions are which universities teach in English, what it costs and whether the degree will help back home. This guide covers all three.
Universities known for engineering
These are examples of universities with strong engineering and technology profiles. English-taught availability differs by university and programme, so check each one.
| University | Known for |
|---|---|
| Bauman Moscow State Technical University | Mechanical, aerospace and robotics engineering |
| Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University | Engineering, energy and technology |
| Tomsk Polytechnic University | Petroleum, power and materials engineering |
| ITMO University | IT, photonics and computer science |
| NUST MISIS | Materials, mining and metallurgy |
| MEPhI and MIPT | Nuclear and applied physics, computing |
| Ural Federal University | Engineering and materials science |
Language of instruction
This is the key issue. Many bachelor's engineering programmes are taught in Russian, so international students often take a one-year preparatory course in Russian and basic subjects first. A number of universities offer English-taught bachelor's and especially master's programmes. Confirm the exact language, duration and fees for the programme you are applying to.
Fees
Published ranges for English-medium and Russian-medium engineering programmes commonly fall between about ₹2 lakh and ₹5 lakh per year, with leading universities charging more. Add hostel and living costs of roughly ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 per month. Our cost guide has the full breakdown. The government scholarship can cover tuition for selected students, see how it works.
Eligibility for Indian students
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and English
- Minimum marks set by the university, commonly around 50% for general category
- JEE is generally not required, but some universities hold their own tests or interviews
- For master's: a relevant bachelor's degree
Will a Russian engineering degree help in India?
Engineering is not regulated in the way medicine is, so there is no licensing exam like FMGE. If you need your degree recognised for government jobs or further study in India, check whether you need an equivalence certificate, for example from the Association of Indian Universities, and ask the university to help with the documents.
Pros and cons
- Pros: lower tuition, strong technical traditions, scholarship opportunities, research facilities in several universities
- Cons: Russian-language teaching in many programmes, a preparatory year, limited English bachelor's options, and the geopolitical and payment risks described below
How to apply
- Shortlist 4 to 6 universities and confirm the language of instruction
- Apply for the government scholarship if eligible, or directly to the university
- Prepare marksheets, translations, passport and medical documents
- Receive your offer and invitation letter
- Apply for your visa and travel
