Serbia offers affordable English-taught study in South-East Europe, especially in medicine, dentistry, engineering and arts. It is not an EU member, but it has a growing international student community in cities such as Belgrade and Novi Sad.
Public universities in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Nis, along with private institutions, teach international students. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, IT and design are popular. For medical study, verify NMC eligibility and the university's English-medium programme before paying any fee.
Applicants typically need Class 12 certificates, a passport and, for medicine, Biology and Chemistry marks plus NEET if returning to India. Some universities hold entrance tests or interviews. Documents may need translation and apostille, so allow extra time.
Living costs are moderate compared with Western Europe. Budget for tuition, accommodation, health cover, residence permit and travel. Learning basic Serbian helps in hospitals, shops and offices. Confirm visa and residence rules directly with official sources.
Indian students need the correct student visa or permit before travelling to Serbia, usually supported by an offer letter, proof of funds, insurance and identity documents. Processing times and rules change, so use official government and university instructions and start the process as soon as you accept your offer. Keep original documents safe and never share them with unverified agents.
Ask each university about merit scholarships, early-payment discounts and fee instalments, and check official government schemes where they exist. Get every benefit in writing, including conditions such as minimum marks. Avoid anyone who promises a guaranteed scholarship or asks for payment to a personal account.
Serbia works best when your course, budget and language comfort match what the country offers. Students who want maximum job opportunities, very low costs or guaranteed immigration outcomes should compare other destinations too, such as Latvia and Cyprus. A short counselling session helps compare options on cost, recognition, safety and career goals.
