Interest in studying in Russia remains high among Indian students, especially for medicine and engineering. If you are planning for the next intake, this guide explains how admission works, when to start, what it costs and which current issues you should check first.
Why students look at Russia in 2026
- Government scholarship places for Indian students: 300 were announced for 2026-27
- A large Indian student community, with news reports citing more than 27,000 Indian students in Russian universities
- Lower tuition than many Western countries, particularly in medicine
- A growing number of English-taught programmes, especially in medicine and at master's level
Typical admission timeline
| When (typical) | What to do |
|---|---|
| Autumn | Shortlist courses. Check whether the government scholarship portal has opened |
| By mid-January | Government scholarship first-stage deadline in recent cycles |
| Winter to spring | Apply to universities directly for paid places. Collect and attest documents |
| Spring to summer | Receive an offer, pay as instructed, and have your invitation letter processed |
| Summer | Complete medical tests, apply for the student visa and book travel |
| September | Arrive and register at your university |
This is a typical pattern, not a guarantee. Each university sets its own deadlines, so check them directly.
How to get admission
- Choose your route: government scholarship (portal only) or paid admission (apply to the university).
- Check eligibility: Class 12 for bachelor's programmes, with the right subjects. Medicine requires NEET qualification if you plan to practise in India.
- Prepare documents: passport, marksheets, translations and attestation, photos and health certificates.
- Receive your offer and invitation letter: the university arranges the official invitation through the Russian authorities.
- Apply for your visa and travel: see our Indian students guide for the main steps.
What does it cost?
Published tuition estimates for popular courses such as MBBS commonly range from about ₹2.3 lakh to ₹7.5 lakh per year, with living costs of roughly ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 a month in hostel accommodation. See the full cost breakdown.
What to check before applying in 2026
- Payments: Sanctions have affected international payments. Ask the university which payment route it uses and confirm with your bank before you pay.
- Travel: Fare trackers show no common direct flights from Delhi, so most journeys involve a connection.
- Advisories: On 30 September 2026 the Ministry of External Affairs issued a fresh advisory warning Indians against offers to join the Russian armed forces and urging due diligence with overseas offers and intermediaries. Use only verifiable universities and agents.
- Recognition: For medicine, follow NMC rules. For engineering, check whether you need degree equivalence for Indian jobs or further study.
