If you are not an EU or EFTA citizen and plan to study in Cyprus for more than 90 days, you need an entry visa and then a student residence permit. Here is how it works for Indian students, based on the Cyprus Migration Department's published guidance.
Who needs a student visa?
Non-EU/EFTA nationals who will study in the Republic of Cyprus for longer than 90 days. The rules follow the EU Students Directive (2016/801), which Cyprus has transposed into national law. This guide covers the Republic of Cyprus. Northern Cyprus has its own separate visa system.
Step by step
- Get an offer and pay as instructed. You need a letter of acceptance from an accredited institution in the Republic of Cyprus.
- Apply for the entry visa. The application is generally submitted through your university to the Migration Department, with documents collected in India, in some cases through a visa application centre. You must apply while outside Cyprus. An application cannot be submitted by someone already in Cyprus on a tourist visa.
- Receive your entry visa and travel. The entry visa allows you to arrive. It is not the whole permit.
- Apply for the residence permit after arrival. You will be asked for proof of enrolment, accommodation, funds and health insurance, and you may need to attend biometrics.
- Renew annually. The permit lasts up to one year and is renewed until your programme ends, provided you still meet the conditions, including making sufficient progress in your studies.
Documents you will usually need
- Completed application form and valid passport with blank pages
- Letter of acceptance and proof of tuition payment
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
- Police clearance certificate from your home country
- Health insurance covering the risks normally covered for Cypriot nationals
- Medical certificates and proof of accommodation, where requested
See Cyprus requirements for more detail. Exact documents and formats can change, so follow your university's current instructions.
Fees and timing
Government fees for student applications are modest, but confirm the current table. Processing can take weeks to a few months, so apply as soon as your offer is confirmed and do not buy non-refundable travel before your visa is approved.
Working on a student permit
Students may work part-time outside study hours, up to 20 hours per week in term and up to 38 hours when classes are suspended. Work is limited to occupations and sectors set by the Ministry of Labour, and contracts must be approved. Breaking these rules can lead to penalties and affect your permit.
Staying after your studies
A student permit does not automatically lead to permanent residence. Graduates usually need to move to another route, such as a job-seeking or employment permit, and long-term residence normally requires years of lawful, continuous residence.
