Scholarships can lower the cost of studying in Cyprus, but it helps to be realistic. Most support for international students comes as merit-based tuition discounts at private universities, not full-funded awards. This guide explains where the money usually comes from and how to improve your chances.

Where scholarships usually come from

Private universities. Institutions such as the University of Nicosia, European University Cyprus and Frederick University offer academic merit scholarships, typically as a percentage off tuition. Published ranges differ by source and by year, with discounts often quoted between about 10% and 75%, and 20% to 50% being common for strong applicants. Many are decided from your marks at the time of admission.

Public universities. Fees at public universities are largely subsidised for Cypriot and EU students, so the big funding benefit does not apply to non-EU students. Some departments offer limited funding for postgraduate or research students, so ask the department directly.

External funding for Indian students. Several Indian trusts and foundations offer loans or scholarships for study abroad, for example the J.N. Tata Endowment and K.C. Mahindra Trust. They have their own eligibility rules, deadlines and often a cap on the amount, so check each one's official site.

Types of support at a glance

Education loan or trust grant Indian banks and trusts Eligibility rules of the lender or trust

How to improve your chances

  1. Apply early. Some awards are limited or decided at admission.
  2. Submit complete marksheets and certificates and a clear statement of purpose.
  3. Ask each university which scholarships exist and whether they renew each year. Many require you to maintain a minimum grade.
  4. Get the scholarship amount and conditions in your offer letter in writing.
  5. Apply to external Indian trusts or lenders in parallel, and check their deadlines.
Be wary of anyone who guarantees a scholarship or says it is "automatic" without showing it in writing. Scholarship percentages reduce tuition only, not living costs, visa fees or insurance.

Do not forget the full cost

A 30% or 50% tuition discount helps, but you still need to show funds for living costs and insurance for your visa. Work out your total budget using our fees guide before deciding.
