The University of Cyprus (UCY) is the country's leading public research university. It is a good option for some international students, but it works differently from the private universities many Indian students apply to. This guide explains what to expect.

About the university

UCY was established in 1989 and admitted its first students in 1992. It is based in Nicosia, has around 7,000 to 7,500 students, and runs eight faculties and 22 departments. It is research-oriented and is public, meaning it is largely state-funded.

The language question

This is the most important point. Teaching at undergraduate level is mainly in Greek, and the university's own information for non-EU undergraduate applicants lists a certificate of good knowledge of the Greek language among the requirements. English-taught options are concentrated at master's and doctoral level, for example in business, economics, data science and some humanities fields. If you want an English-taught bachelor's degree, private universities in Cyprus are usually the more practical choice.

Tuition fees for non-EU students

Level Typical non-EU fee
Undergraduate €6,834 per academic year (listed)
Master's Roughly €5,000 to €10,000 per year depending on programme
Doctoral Varies by programme, check with the department

Fees for Cypriot and EU undergraduates are paid by the state, which is why non-EU students pay more. Fee levels are set by the authorities and can change, so always check the programme page.

How to apply as an international student

  1. Pick a programme and confirm its language of teaching and eligibility for non-EU applicants.
  2. Read the department's admission page for deadlines, required documents and any interview or exam.
  3. Prepare transcripts, degree certificates (for master's), English or Greek evidence, passport and statement of purpose.
  4. Apply through the university's official admissions channel.
  5. If you receive an offer, begin the entry visa and residence permit process described in our visa guide.
